Captain McTaggart was shot down May 14th, 1943. As the group approached
their rendezvous with 40 B-17s near St Nicholas, Belgium, the bombers were
under attack by FW190s on the sides of thier formation. Leaving the 84th as top
cover, the 82nd and 83rd dove on the German fighters chasing them into the
bomber gunner's fire and enemy flak. The airfight ended in a draw with both
sides losing three. Besides McTaggart, Capt. Robert Adamina and Flight Officer
Martinek were also shot down.
McTaggart avoided POW status and evaded through Spain in June.
